What to do about hot tub foam

Foam is a symptom. Another bottle of defoamer may quiet the bubbles for an evening and leave the cause untouched. Most spa foam traces to soft fill water, oils and lotions, detergent residue — or a mix. Diagnose first; dose second.

This guide stays in water care: calcium where Soft kits need it, enzyme for scum-line residue, weekly oxidizer for bather waste, and when defoamer is only a bandage. Foam is not a claim about infection or disease.

Foam is a symptom — decide before you pour

Work this tree in order:

1. Is fill water Soft? Low calcium (and often low TA) → raise calcium toward target; see Soft path below.
2. Are organics high? Lotions, body oils, hair products, sunscreen → enzyme + weekly non-chlorine oxidizer; wipe the waterline; rinse the filter.
3. Detergent / swimsuit residue? New suits and washed fabrics shed surfactants → rinse suits in clean water only; avoid soap in the tub.
4. Still foaming after water and organics are addressed? Defoamer can knock foam down for a session. It does not fix Soft water.
5. Persistent across a full cycle? Drain on schedule; Line Flush before drain flushes buildup from plumbing; refill with a matched Soft / Balanced / Hard setup.

Do not skip sanitizer while you chase foam. Hold ≥3 ppm free chlorine (or 4–8 ppm bromine) with your own registered product whenever the tub is in use.

Cause 1 — Soft water / low calcium

Soft fill (Water Match Soft: calcium under ~80, TA under ~45 on many Pacific Northwest, New England, and mountain systems — examples only) lacks mineral “weight.” Jets whip the surface; foam hangs around.

Fix:

• Add CAL+ (calcium hardness increaser) slowly in front of a jet toward roughly 100–150 ppm calcium hardness when you are on a Soft path.
• Soft kits also use small ALK+ steps first so TA is not brittle — then CAL+, then borate pH Lock, then BYO sanitizer.
• Confirm with a strip. Do not blast Soft water with Hard-kit ALK− logic.

Hard water usually does not need more calcium; see hard-water start-up. If your ZIP says Hard and you still foam, look at organics and residue next — not another bag of calcium.

Cause 2 — Oils, lotions, and scum-line residue

Bather load leaves oils and lotions in the water and as a film at the waterline. Jets turn that film into foam.

Fix (weekly rhythm):

• Enzyme — breaks down scum-line residue and oils. Typical Cycle Box framing: about 1 oz on a weekly day (follow your product label).
• Weekly Clear (MPS / potassium monopersulfate) — oxidizes sweat, oils, and lotions; keeps water clear. Add at least 30 minutes after enzyme (right after the next soak works well). Test free chlorine before the pouch; MPS can inflate total/combined chlorine readings for about a day.
• Wipe the waterline once a week.
• Rinse the filter once a week so trapped organics do not re-seed the water.

Critical: Weekly Clear is a non-chlorine oxidizer alongside registered sanitizer — not a sanitizer, not a chlorine substitute, not a reason to run lower sanitizer.

Cause 3 — Detergent and swimsuit residue

Laundry soap, fabric softener, and “washed” swimwear introduce surfactants that foam under jets.

Fix:

• Rinse suits in plain water; skip detergent trips into the spa.
• Avoid pouring any household cleaner into the tub.
• After a heavy foam event from a new suit, a partial drain or full drain-cycle may be faster than stacking defoamer.

Defoamer = bandage

Defoamer collapses foam at the surface. Useful for a party night. It will not:

• Raise soft-water calcium
• Remove the lotion load that feeds the next foam event
• Replace enzyme, oxidizer, or a proper Soft fill-day setup

If you reach for defoamer every soak, fix the cause. FAQ below repeats the short version: defoamer does not fix Soft water.

Persist → drain-cycle timing

When foam returns no matter what you dose:

1. Run Line Flush as labeled before the next drain — flushes buildup from plumbing so residue leaves with the water.
2. Drain, rinse shell, clean or replace filter.
3. Refill and run Soft / Balanced / Hard fill-day order from your Water Match card — Soft gets ALK+ / CAL+; Hard gets staged ALK− (see P2 / P3).
4. Resume weekly enzyme + Weekly Clear + sanitizer floor.

One box per water change is the habit framing for Cycle Box: fill packets for your hose, then thirteen weekly oxidizer pouches, enzyme, and strips until the next drain.

Sanitizer floor (still applies)

Foam does not mean you should change sanitizer strategy toward “gentler” or lower residuals. Keep:

• ≥3 ppm free chlorine, or
• 4–8 ppm bromine

…with a registered product, whenever the tub is in use. Nothing in the box replaces that floor. Clearer water from oxidizer and enzyme is water-quality care, not a sanitizer claim.
