Start-up chemicals for hard-water hot tubs

Hard fill water does not forgive a generic start-up bottle. High calcium, high total alkalinity (TA), or both means fill day has a different order: bring TA down first, set a borate buffer, leave hard calcium alone when it is already high, and chlorinate (or brominate) with your registered sanitizer.

This checklist follows the Hard path used in TheraSoak Water Match kits. Soft and Balanced differ — we contrast Soft briefly at the end so you do not mix the recipes.

Who this is for

Hard profile in Water Match terms:

• Calcium (hardness) over ~200 ppm, or
• Total alkalinity over ~110 ppm

Common on many systems in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, and much of the Midwest — examples only. Your ZIP estimate and a fill-day strip beat regional folklore.

If you are Soft (low calcium / low TA), skip the heavy ALK− course and use the Soft section below — foam and under-mineralized water are your issues, not carbonate overload.

Day before: Line Flush, then drain

1. Add Line Flush and run jets as the flush label directs (typically about 24 hours before you drain).
2. Drain the spa.
3. Rinse the shell.
4. Clean or replace the filter.

Claims-safe flush language: Line Flush flushes buildup from plumbing before you drain — plumbing residue and gunk that would otherwise stay in the lines. It is not positioned as a microbial treatment.

Fill day — Hard path (order matters)

1. Fill and heat

Fill with your hose water. Circulate and heat. Once the water is moving, dip a strip before you add adjusters.

2. Strip-confirm vs Water Match card

Compare TA (and hardness) to the estimate on your card:

If alkalinity reads more than 30 ppm higher than the card, add your spare ALK− per 200 gallons. If more than 30 ppm lower, hold one ALK− back.

No card yet? Still strip first. High TA → plan staged dry acid toward ~50–80 ppm TA after setup.

3. Staged ALK− (jets on, lid open)

Hard and Balanced kits that carry ALK−:

• Jets on, lid open.
• Add half the ALK− (sodium bisulfate) dose.
• Wait ~30 minutes.
• Add the rest.
• Run jets lid-open 1–2 hours while pH climbs as CO₂ leaves.

4. pH Lock (borate buffer)

Add pH Lock with jets running — spread across the surface rather than dumping in one spot. Target about 50 ppm borate (as boron). Borate buffers rising pH without feeding the carbonate climb. Borate is not a sanitizer.

5. Mineral (only if your kit includes it)

If a Mineral packet is in the box (magnesium — gated on whether beta keeps it), add the same way: jets running, spread on the surface. Composition only: magnesium-enriched water if present. No soft-skin story on this page.

6. Sanitizer — BYO, non-negotiable

Chlorinate to about 3–5 ppm free chlorine with a registered chlorine product, or bring bromine into the 4–8 ppm band if that is your system. Typical dichlor ballpark for planning: about 8 g (roughly two level teaspoons) per 400 gal raises FC about 3 ppm — always follow the label on your sanitizer.

Nothing in Cycle Box replaces sanitizer. Weekly Clear (MPS) later in the cycle is a non-chlorine oxidizer, not a sanitizer.

7. Next-day check

Test pH, TA, and FC.

Leave hard calcium as-is

Usually do not add CAL+ on hard water. If calcium is already high, more calcium fights you on scale risk and is not the Soft-foam fix. Hard kits count ALK− and pH Lock; they do not pile on calcium hardness increaser by default.

Soft kits are the opposite: they bring calcium up toward roughly 100–150 ppm CH when fill is soft. Do not run Soft instructions on Hard water.

Soft contrast (short — so you do not mix paths)

Balanced sits in the middle: light ALK− if the strip asks for it, then pH Lock.

After fill day: the 13-week habit (framing)

One box per water change is the Cycle Box rhythm: fill-day packets, then weekly enzyme + Weekly Clear oxidizer, strips, and a drain when the next box arrives. Dichlor adds cyanuric acid over time; a quarterly drain resets CYA for most chlorine owners. If CYA climbs high before cycle end, switch top-ups to a registered spa liquid chlorine until the next drain — follow that label.

Weekly rhythm (chemistry only):

• After each soak: test FC; top to 3–5 ppm.
• Once a week: enzyme (breaks down scum-line residue) and, at least 30 minutes later, Weekly Clear pouch (oxidizes sweat, oils, lotions; keeps water clear). MPS can inflate some combined-chlorine readings for about a day — test FC with that in mind.
• Once a week: rinse filter; wipe waterline.
• Every four weeks: check CYA on a strip if you use dichlor.

Why generic start-up kits fail hard fills

One-size bottles assume average hose water. Hard fills deliver high TA and/or high calcium on day one. A kit that adds bicarbonate “to buffer” or calcium “for balance” on that water worsens drift or scale pressure. Matched counts — more ALK−, no casual CAL+, real borate dose — exist because the hose is not average.
